Clinical neuropsychology services for children, adolescents, young people

Clinical Neuropsychology

At NeuroKids, we offer comprehensive clinical neuropsychology services to support children and young people with neurological, neuropsychological, neuropsychiatric, and neurodevelopmental conditions. Our goal is to enhance cognitive, emotional, and behavioural functioning, promoting overall well-being and development.

Neuropsychological Assessments

Neuropsychological assessments provide a detailed understanding of how a child’s brain functions in relation to their learning, behaviour, and emotional well-being. These comprehensive evaluations examine cognitive abilities such as memory, attention, and problem-solving, as well as academic skills and social-emotional development.

A detailed report provides clear insights into strengths and challenges, with practical recommendations for interventions, therapies, and accommodations. The results help guide families, schools, and professionals in supporting the child’s development and needs effectively.

What is the Purpose of a Neuropsychological Assessment?

What is the purpose of a neuropsychology assessment

Neuropsychological assessments inform understanding of the relationship between brain and behavioural functioning:

  • Cognitive Profile: Evaluating how a child processes information, highlighting strengths and weaknesses relative to peers.

  • Daily Functioning: Identifying how brain processes impact learning, behaviour, and social-emotional functioning.

  • Diagnosis: Providing insights to support the diagnosis of neurological, neurodevelopmental, or neuropsychiatric conditions.

  • Recommendations: Strategies and interventions to address specific needs.

What Do Neuropsychological Assessments Evaluate?

Neuropsychological assessments are designed to evaluate a wide range of cognitive, social, behavioural and functional skills. â€‹This may include:

  • Intellectual Functioning: Verbal and visual reasoning skills.

  • Cognitive Abilities: Memory, attention, processing speed, executive functions.

  • Academic Skills: Reading, writing, numeracy, and overall learning progress.

  • Social and Emotional Development: Social skills, emotional regulation, mood.

How Do Neuropsychological Assessments Inform Treatment?

How do neuropsychology assessments inform treatment

Neuropsychological assessments provide key insights to guide interventions and inform support that is tailored to the child's needs. Support may include:

  • Cognitive Interventions: Strategies to support weaknesses in skills, such as memory, attention and problem-solving

  • Behavioural Strategies: To manage challenges, such as impulsivity or frustration

  • Emotional Regulation: Developing coping strategies to manage anxiety and mood.

  • Social Skills Training:  Enhancing communication and peer interactions.

  • Educational Accommodations:  Inform learning plans or classroom modifications.

Is This the Right Service for My Child?

NeuroKids provides specialist neuropsychological assessments for children and young people with neurological, neurodevelopmental or acquired brain injury profiles where there is a clear referral question and purpose for assessment. Our assessments are designed to provide detailed understanding of how brain function relates to cognition, behaviour, emotion, and everyday functioning, supporting therapeutic planning, educational decision-making, care planning, or rehabilitation.

Neuropsychological assessment is most appropriate when:
  • There is a diagnosed or suspected neurological condition, brain injury, or complex neurodevelopmental need

  • You are seeking to understand how brain function contributes to cognitive, behavioural or emotional differences

  • Assessment findings will be used to guide intervention, rehabilitation, educational support or care planning

  • There are specific questions you want the assessment to answer (e.g., memory, attention, executive function, learning profile, processing speed, fatigue, behavioural regulation)

For Parent-Led Referrals

Our neuropsychological assessment does not include:
  • General wellbeing checks or exploratory consultations

  • “Let’s see what’s going on” without a clear question

  • Educational advice without relation to neurocognitive functioning

  • Non-specific concerns about school or behaviour without a defined outcome for assessment

Before enquiring about a neuropsychological assessment, we recommend parents consider:

  1. What the specific concern or question is

  2. How the results of the assessment will be used

  3. Whether there is existing clinical or educational information to inform the assessment brief

If you are unsure whether neuropsychological assessment is the right starting point,  you can download our Neuropsychology Assessment & Support Guide for Parents, which provides more detail about what the assessment involves, fees and the outcomes you can expect.

For Case Managers & Solicitors:

Where NeuroKids is formally instructed by a case manager or solicitor, neuropsychological assessment is provided as part of a structured medico-legal, rehabilitation or therapeutic programme, tailored to the questions set out in the letter of instruction and integrated with multidisciplinary care plans.

INITIAL CONSULTAION

A discussion with parents, caregivers and professionals to gather developmental, medical, educational and social history. Discussions with the child also help identify key areas to focus on during the assessment.

1

STANDARDISED TESTING

The child completes structured tasks using validated tools to assess cognitive, behavioural, and emotional domains. Testing is conducted in at home, school, or clinical settings—to ensure reliability and engagement.

2

BEHAVIOURAL OBSERVATIONS

Observations during testing provide insights into the child’s interaction style, persistence, focus and emotion skills. When needed, school observations may be conducted to inform  functioning in real life situations.

3

FEEDBACK & LIAISON

A feedback session allows parents or caregivers to discuss findings, ask questions, and collaboratively plan next steps. We also work with schools and other  professionals to support the child's and implement strategies across settings

5

CLINICAL REPORT

Families receive a  detailed report with a summary of test findings, formulation explaining the child's   neuropsychological and psychological needs, and  tailored recommendations with  strategies to support presenting needs.
