Educational and Child Psychology Services in Scotland

Dr Kirstie Rees is a Chartered Educational and Child Psychologist with a wealth of expertise in supporting children and young people with brain injuries, neurodevelopmental, special educational, and mental health needs. As an associate with NeuroKids, she is dedicated to helping children overcome challenges related to learning difficulties, disabilities, and mental health, fostering their growth and resilience within family, school, and community settings.

 

With extensive experience in consultation, assessment, and intervention, Dr Rees is dedicated to strengthening parental attachment and enhancing parents’ understanding of their children’s needs, and offers individual therapeutic support to manage cognitive, behavioural and mental health needs. She works closely with families and schools to identify the most effective processes for each child, drawing on her expertise in evidence-based approaches—such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), EMDR Therapy, Positive Behavioural Support, Solution-Focused Therapy, and Trauma-Informed Care—to deliver tailored interventions that empower parents, carers, and educators to foster development and well-being.

 

Dr Rees holds specialist expertise in supporting children and young people with Severe and Profound Learning Disabilities (SLD/PMLD), cerebral palsy and autism, focusing on developing functional skills, understanding complex behaviours, and offering practical strategies at home and in the classroom. She has developed innovative training programs and intervention frameworks that have been implemented at local and national levels. Her research, publications, and keynote speeches at national and international conferences reflect her commitment to creating inclusive, supportive environments for children and their families, and she is the author of "The Mental Health and Wellbeing of Children and Young People with Learning Difficulties: A Guide for Educators."

 

Dr Rees holds a Doctorate in Educational and Child Psychology and a Postgraduate Certificate in Severe and Profound Learning Disabilities. She is a Chartered Member of the British Psychological Society (BPS), registered with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC), and actively contributes to advancing the field as Chair of the Association of Child and Adolescent Mental Health (ACAMH) Scottish Branch and Depute Chair of the Qualification of Educational Psychology (Scotland) Board.​
