Psychological therapy for children and young people with brain injury

Brain Injury &
Neurological Conditions

A brain injury can profoundly impact the life of a child or young person, affecting not only their cognitive and physical abilities but also emotional well-being, behaviour, and relationships. We specialise in neurorehabilitation for children recovering from traumatic brain injuries (TBI), strokes, encephalitis, or other acquired brain injuries.

Brain Injury Support & Rehabilitation Services

Our goal is to help children rebuild skills, regain confidence, and navigate their recovery journey after neurological injury. Neurorehabilitation addresses both immediate and long-term challenges, offering support for children and their families recovering from or living with brain injuries.

Our approach includes comprehensive assessments to identify strengths and challenges, cognitive and behavioural rehabilitation to enhance learning and emotional regulation, family and school support to guide recovery.

Who We Support

NeuroKids provides specialist support for children and young people who have experienced an acquired brain injury (ABI), including but not limited to:

  • Traumatic brain injury (TBI)

  • Hypoxic-ischaemic injury

  • Stroke

  • Encephalitis

  • Non-accidental injury (NAI)

  • Infection or inflammation affecting the brain

These injuries can affect thinking, behaviour, emotion and everyday functioning. Our work is focused on understanding how the injury impacts the child and providing rehabilitation-oriented support that leads to meaningful functional gains.

Why Assessment Matters First

The effects of brain injury are complex and variable. To plan effective support, we always begin with a comprehensive assessment neuropsychological needs assessment.

An initial needs assessment ensures:
  • Cognitive, emotional and behavioural strengths and challenges are identified

  • Patterns of difficulty are understood in the context of brain-function relationships

  • Support goals are clear, measurable and relevant

  • Recommendations can be tailored to home, school and community environments

Assessment findings provide the foundation for all rehabilitation, therapy and planning that follows.

How We Support After Assessment

Once needs are understood, we provide rehabilitation-focused support tailored to the child. Our approach is goal-focused, monitored and adjusted over time to reflect progress, development and emerging needs.

Support may include:
  • Neuropsychological Rehabilitation Planning: Translating assessment findings into practical goals

  • Therapeutic Support: Psychological therapy targeting emotional adjustment, behavioural regulation and resilience

  • Cognitive Strategy Development: Supporting attention, memory, planning and executive functions

  • Family Support and Coaching: Helping families understand and respond adaptively

  • Liaison with Education and Care Teams: Ensuring recommendations are understood and implemented

  • Coordination of Multidisciplinary Care: For children with complex or overlapping needs

Where NeuroKids is formally instructed by a case manager or solicitor, brain injury assessment and rehabilitation planning are provided as part of a coordinated programme, tailored to the questions set out in the instruction and aligned with wider therapeutic, educational and care objectives.

Reports can be delivered in formats suitable for professional planning or medico-legal processes.

Rehabilitation Needs We Commonly Support

Following assessment and formulation, rehabilitation-focused support may include work in the following areas:

EMOTIONAL SUPPORT
Brain injuries can lead to feelings of frustration, sadness, anxiety, or isolation for children and their families. Therapy provides a safe space to process emotions, adjust to new circumstances, and build coping strategies.

COGNITIVE REHABILITATION
Cognitive challenges, such as memory loss, attention difficulties, or problems with executive functioning, are common after brain injury. Psychological therapy helps children develop strategies to adapt and strengthen these skills, improving their daily functioning.

BEHAVIOURAL ADJUSTMENT
Behavioural changes, such as impulsivity, aggression, or difficulty self-regulating, often follow brain injury. Therapy can address these changes, teaching children and families how to manage and respond effectively.

FAMILY DYNAMICS

A brain injury impacts the whole family. Therapy helps families understand the injury, adjust to changes, and work together to provide a supportive environment.

SOCIAL SKILLS & PEER RELATIONSHIPS

Children with brain injuries may struggle with social interactions or maintaining friendships. Therapy can help rebuild social skills and confidence, encouraging positive relationships.

EDUCATIONAL SUPPORT

Returning to school after a brain injury can be challenging due to changes in cognitive, emotional, physical, and social functioning. Psychological support helps children reintegrate by guiding staff to understand their needs and building confidence in the classroom.
